HP, the world’s biggest technology company, has announced a new tablet computer and two new phones. The challenge to Apple and Google’s growing range of products will see Palm’s webOS making a comeback in an increasingly crowded marketplace.
HP’s TouchPad – a 9.7” tablet – will “transform how people think, how they feel and how they connect," said Todd Bradley, executive vice president of HP's personal systems group.
The TouchPad’s WebOS will also include wireless printing to compatible HP printers, mirroring the features offered by Apple’s AirPrint technology. The Pre3 and the TouchPad will also be able to communicate with each other by tapping the two devices together.
It will be accompanied by a small phone, the Veer, with a screen that’s just 2.6”. HP claims that it will offer an alternative to “jumbo phones”, while also offering a 3.6” alternative, the Pre3.
Both phones feature slide-out keyboards, video calling capability and 16 or 32 gigabytes of storage. There was no mention on how much the devices will cost.

London, Jan 14 (ANI): Scientists have designed a new kind of armour that they are calling "bullet-proof custard".

Buzz up!Researchers at BAE systems claim that the lightweight material would eventually replace thick and heavy armours.

Not only would it be bullet proof, but also reduce soldiers' fatigue in lugging around the vest.

The armour is made from a combination of "shear-thickening" liquid and the existing material used in bulletproof vests - called Kevlar - and stops bullets by 'sticking' to them.

"It's very similar to custard in the sense that the molecules lock together when it's struck," The Telegraph quoted Stewart Penny, BAE's business development manager, as telling BBC.

"The Kevlar with the liquid works much faster and the impact isn't anything like as deep," he added. (ANI)

LG announced the first smartphone with a dual-core chip, the Optimus 2X. Dual-core phones, which pack more processing power than the current single-core models, are expected to be a major trend for cell phones in 2011.
The Optimus 2X's 1GHz processor, Nvidia's Tegra 2 chip, enables features like HDMI mirroring, which lets you duplicate whatever's on the phone's 4-inch WVGA display, including games, at full HD resolution on an external screen. It's also said to provide smoother Web browsing and allow multitasking of applications with virtually no screen lag.
"Dual-core technology is the next leap forward in mobile technology so this is no small achievement to be the first to offer a smartphone utilizing this technology," Jong-seok Park, CEO LG Electronics Mobile, said in a statement. "With unique features such as HDMI mirroring and exceptional graphics performance, the LG Optimus 2X is proof of LG's commitment to high-end smartphones in 2011."
LG's dual-core announcement is the first in what will probably be the first in a long-line of dual-core mobile devices from several manufacturers. Earlier this month Texas Instruments released detailed specs about its 1.5GHz dual-core chip, the OMAP4440. In addition, the CEO of RIM said last week that its PlayBook tablet would be the first in what would likely be a line of multi-core devices, including smartphones.
The Optimus 2X has onboard memory of 8GB, though a microSD card slot will let you add up to 32GB more. A forward-facing camera makes the phone friendly to video calls, and the rear camera will capture images up to 8 megapixels. Like the iPhone 4, the Optimus is equipped with an accelerometer and gyroscope for motion-controlled gaming. he phone will ship with Android 2.2 ("Froyo"), upgradeable to 2.3 ("Gingerbread").
The phone will launch in Korea in January, with Europe and other parts of Asia "to follow." It's unknown whether the phone will ever be released in the U.S.

Fujifilm has launched a camera that can capture 3D images and movies that can viewed with or without glasses.
Fujifilm claims that its Real 3D W3 can shoot 3D video in high definition, complete with the ability to playback via direct connection to most 3D TVs.
The camera has two Fujinon 3x optical zoom lenses and twin 10 megapixel CCD sensors that provide the option of viewing 3D images on the large LCD screen. This means you can see the images on 3D HD TV systems using the 3D glasses that come with the telly. The cameras come with a Mini HDMI 1.4 port and a 3.5-inch widescreen LCD.
The screen apparently has 1150 pixel resolution that displays images in 3D without the need for special glasses. The idea is to make 3D imaging more accessible to all consumers by enabling them to shoot in 3D HD and then easily view their photos and movies on most 3D TV systems.
One downside is that for what looks a little like something that's a bit cheap and cheerful, it has a price tag of $599.Perhaps the biggest downside is that you will end up showing your friends your holiday pictures in 3D and you'll both be bored in multiple dimensions.

Just when you thought cellphone cameras couldn’t squeeze in any more megapixels, Sony announces a new cellphone camera sensor that supports 16MP photos and 1080p high-definition video.Sony will begin offering the sensor to manufacturers in January, which means we’ll probably see some cellphones taking advantage of it next year. Most likely, it will show up in Sony Ericsson cellphones first. Sony also announced “the industry’s smallest and thinnest” sensor that will support 8MP pictures in very thin phones. Both sensors are back-illuminated, which increases light sensitivity and reduces picture noise.
With this announcement, Sony is now the megapixel king for cellphone cameras. But does that title really mean anything? It’s long been argued that megapixels don’t matter as much as other technical aspects of a camera like lens quality. When it comes to cellphone cameras, manufacturers are even more limited by their diminutive size. Apple seems to have found a sweet spot with its 5MP iPhone 4 cameras, which best the Droid X and Evo 4G’s 8MP cameras. Perhaps a jump to 16MP will offer some improvement over the iPhone 4’s camera, but will it be enough to justify the increased storage costs? Current iPhone 4 pictures come in at around 2MB — 16MP pics would eat up even more space.
It’s also worth questioning the usefulness of 1080p video on a cellphone. On the iPhone 4, 10 minutes of a 720p recording takes up around 1GB of space. With 1080p video, that number may hover around 3GB depending on the compression used. Regardless of the specific file size, 1080p video is going to take up a big chunk of space on cellphones for very little benefit. The difference between 1080p and 720p video isn’t easy to tell in televisions under 50-inches, and it’s certainly overkill for video meant to be watched on the web. The large file size will also make it unfeasible for cellphones with less than 32GB of storage.
Instead of pushing to higher megapixel lengths, Sony may be better off figuring out other ways to increase cellphone picture quality. For example, it could make mechanical shutters standard with its cameras, which would avoid the rolling shutter effect many users are seeing with cellphone cameras (even the iPhone 4’s).

hi bloggers....
This one has been a hotly requested item from you all: a review of the Samsung Galaxy S. Samsung sent us their newest Galaxy S phone, the Epic 4G for use on Sprint's WiMAX network. It's the first 4" phone we've reviewed, the first to use Samsung's Hummingbird SoC and the first with a Super AMOLED display. The CPU performance proved to be on par with the Motorola Droid X and other 1GHz Android offerings, but the GPU performance is a good 30 - 45% better than anything else on the market today. The new Super AMOLED display is also a huge improvement over the AMOLED screens we've seen in other Android phones.
Battery life leaves a lot to be desired as the Epic 4G lasted less than 4 hours in our 3G/4G web browsing tests. We also encountered issues with the phone's GPS receiver as many others have reported.
Overall Samsung's Epic 4G is a nice step forward for Android, but with a few glaring issues it remains imperfect.

hi bloggers....
Microsoft has released to manufacturing its Windows Phone 7 operating system for smartphones, taking a major step in its efforts to regain momentum in the mobile device market. Word of the milestone came in a blog posted by Terry Myerson, Corporate Vice President of Windows Phone engineering.
From here Microsoft will be sending the mobile operating system to handset manufacturers who will build it into their products. Microsoft has said a number of manufacturers, including Dell, HTC, LG and Samsung, have committed to using Windows Phone 7.
Microsoft is playing catch-up in the mobile operating system arena where Windows Mobile, the current version of the vendor's mobile operating system, lags behind leaders Symbian and Research In Motion, and even more recent entrants Android and Apple's iPhone OS. In the second quarter of this year Windows Mobile held only a five-percent share of the worldwide smartphone operating system market, according to market research firm Gartner, down from 9.3 percent in the second quarter of 2009.
I                   t Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference in July Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer acknowledged that the company had missed "a whole generation of users" with its earlier mobile software efforts, but vowed to make up for lost ground with Windows Phone 7. Throughout WPC Microsoft executives never missed an opportunity to tout the capabilities of the new mobile operating system.
Efforts to build support for Windows Mobile 7 also include creation of an online showroom called Mobile App Match to spur development of third-party applications for the mobile operating system, and supporting the development of video games that will run with Windows Phone 7.
"While the final integration of Windows Phone 7 with our partners' hardware, software, and networks is underway, the work of our internal engineering team is largely complete," Myerson said in his blog.
